The History of Side View Mirrors

Depending on what side of the world you're on, it's called a wing mirror, fender mirror, door mirror, or side view mirror. But, it wasn't until the late 1960s that automobile manufacturers turned this once "luxury" feature into a necessity, mostly due to development of multi-lane roads and highways.

Windshield Wipers

There was another common accessory that the car and truck industry once warranted unnecessary. Mary Anderson, a native of Alabama, visited the snowy streets of New York City via a horseless trolley car in 1903. She noticed how the driver kept having to get up and wipe the sleet off his windshield with his hand. She immediately invented her first patent: a mechanical arm with a rubber blade that could be maneuvered from the inside of a vehicle. She called it "the window cleaning device." Her invention was largely ignored until the popularity of automobiles came into existence around the 1920s, after her patent expired.
